Much to be Learned from Chickens and Eggs

The Living Eggs Programme provides a unique hands-on opportunity for children to get up close and personal with the chick hatching process and this month, the children at Active Explorers Blockhouse Bay were treated to an inside glimpse of nature at work.

“This was such an enriching programme for our children,” says centre manager Anjana Andrews.

“We waited patiently for the eggs to hatch in the incubator and there was a lot of excitement when eight chicks came out.”

Fascinated to watch them eat, sleep and grow, the children took care of the chicks and learned a lot of new words in the process (incubator, brooder box, pipping and hatching for starters).

“Even the parents had some interactive learning moments watching the eggs and chickens with their children.”

When the two-week programme drew to a close Yaseen's family adopted the two female chicks and the rest were returned to Living Eggs, ready to inspire a whole new group of children.
